History of Newark

The area that is now Newark was first settled by the Shawnee tribe in the late 1700s. The first Europeans to visit the area were French fur traders, and the first European settlers arrived in 1805. The town was officially founded in 1810, and it was named after Newark, England.

Newark played a significant role in the Civil War. In 1864, Union troops led by General Sherman marched through the town on their way to Atlanta. The town was also home to a Confederate prison camp, and over 5,000 Confederate prisoners were held there during the war.

Local Demographics

The median age in Newark is 37.6 years, and the majority of the population (54.8%) is white. The next largest group is black or African American (27.8%), followed by Hispanic or Latino (10.5%).

Newark is home to over 60 parks and recreational areas, including Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve, Deer Haven Preserve, and Licking Valley Park. There are also several miles of hiking and biking trails in the area.
