Divorce Resources & Support
A curated list of trusted help — legal, financial, emotional, and practical.
You don’t have to figure this out alone.
Divorce touches every part of life at once — legal questions, financial decisions, mental health, family logistics, sometimes safety. No single professional handles all of it, and no one expects you to navigate it solo. Below are the resources I recommend most often to the clients I work with as a Certified Divorce Real Estate Expert (CDRE).
Some are free. Some are low-cost. All are starting points — verify credentials, read reviews, and pick the people whose approach fits your situation. If you’re tired and just want help managing all of it, that’s what I’m here for too. Scroll to the bottom for a personal note.
Legal
Attorneys & Legal Aid
Every divorce involves at least one attorney conversation. If cost is a barrier, legal aid and pro bono programs exist in every Ohio county.
Ohio State Bar Association
Lawyer referral service, pro bono directories, and free educational materials on Ohio family law.
ohiobar.org →American Bar Association — Family Law Section
Educational materials on family law and a national directory for finding attorneys who specialize in divorce.
americanbar.org →Legal Aid Society

CDFAs, Planners & Tax Guidance
A Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA) is often the most important professional in a divorce after the attorney — they model the long-term financial impact of property division, alimony, and retirement decisions before they get locked in.
Institute for Divorce Financial Analysts
Directory of credentialed CDFAs nationwide. These specialists model how settlement choices will play out financially over the next 5, 10, 20 years.

Property & Home Sale Help
If the marital home is part of your divorce, a Certified Divorce Real Estate Expert can run the sale as a neutral process serving both spouses equally — not a standard listing arrangement.
Ilumni Institute — CDRE Directory
The organization that certifies CDREs. Search for credentialed divorce real estate experts in your state.
ilumniinstitute.com →Jim West Team — Divorce Home Sales Guide
If you’re in Marysville or Union County and the home is part of your divorce, my own divorce home sale guide walks through the three paths (sell / buyout / co-own), the process, and the most expensive mistakes.

Therapists, Counselors & Support Programs
Divorce affects mental health for everyone involved, including kids. Talking to a professional — or joining a peer group — isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s how thousands of people get through this every year.

Group-based support program with seminars, weekly meetings, and online resources for emotional recovery during and after divorce. Often hosted by local churches.
divorcecare.org →Psychology Today — Find a Therapist
Searchable directory of licensed therapists, filterable by specialty (divorce, family therapy, grief counseling), insurance accepted, and location.
psychologytoday.com →American Psychological Association
“Find a Psychologist” tool plus articles on coping strategies, family well-being, and mental health during divorce.
apa.org →Mediation
Alternative Dispute Resolution
Mediation can resolve property and parenting disputes outside of court — faster, cheaper, and usually less adversarial than litigation. Worth exploring before either side files a contested motion.
Academy of Professional Family Mediators
National directory of certified family mediators trained to handle property division, parenting plans, and other disputes.
apfmnet.org →Union County Court Mediation Services
Many Ohio counties run their own low-cost or sliding-scale mediation programs. Search “family mediation” plus your county name, or call the Domestic Relations Court directly.

There Is an Other Side
If you’ve made it this far down the page, you’re probably tired. Maybe overwhelmed. Maybe just wanting one person to help you sort through all of this. If that’s where you are, reach out. I’ve walked plenty of clients through this, and I’ve walked it myself.
My favorite verse is Jeremiah 29:11:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
I went through a divorce myself, and this verse helped me get to the other side. Today I have a beautiful woman beside me and an 18-year-old daughter. There is, most definitely, an other side.
If you need help with any of these resources, or you’re just exhausted and want someone to help carry it — reach out. No pressure, no obligation, no follow-up sequence.
Where to Next
If the home is part of your divorce: the Divorce Home Sales Guide walks through the three paths (sell, buyout, co-own), the CDRE-led sale process, and the most common mistakes in Ohio.
If you want to understand neutral representation: the What is a CDRE page covers the training, the fiduciary structure, and how CDREs coordinate with attorneys and CDFAs.
If you’d rather just talk: text or call (614) 507-5732. Texting is often the easiest first step — ask one question, no commitment.
